1. Open the page/post you want to edit.

Or, create a new post/page.

2. Click “add media”.

3. Click “select files”.

4. Upload your PDF.

5. Insert into post.

The text in the “title” field is what will show up in your post as hyperlinked text, so choose it carefully.

There are two stages to add PDF files to your pages.

1. Make the PDF (if your file is already in PDF format you can skip to stage 2).
2. Upload the PDF to WordPress.

Here is a quick guide:

Mac Instructions:

1. Open your document in Microsoft Word (or whatever word processor you use).
2. Go to file -> print.
3. Click PDF (Instead of selecting your default printer).
4. Click Print -> Save as PDF.
5. Pick a file name and location for your new PDF (The easiest place to find the file is either in Documents or on your desktop).
6. Open the PDF in Preview to make sure the PDF looks just right.
7. You’re done.
   

Windows Instructions:

1. Download CutePDF (free).
2. Install CutePDF (you may need to reboot your computer).
3. Open your document in Microsoft Word (or whatever word processor you use).
4. Go to file -> print.
5. Select the CutePDF printer (Instead of selecting your default printer).
6. Click “Print”.
7. Pick a file name and location for your new PDF (The easiest place to find the file is either in “My Documents” or on your desktop).
8. Open the PDF in Acrobat Reader to make sure the PDF looks just right.
9. You’re done.

If you only want to add one resource:

1. Find that resource on Amazon.com.

Then, click “Add to Widget” in the site stripe.

2. Select the correct widget to update.

In the pop-up box, click  “Update an existing widget”, and then select the widget type and title. Add any comment you want to display with that resource, then click “Save and get code”.

3. Embed the HTML code in your WordPress widget.

As my dad would say, “Hang on to your hat, we’re about to jump a creek.” This part can be a little tricky, but you shouldn’t have any trouble if you follow these instructions to the letter.

Click the “Copy” button (see above), then go to your WordPress dashboard. Find the “Appearance” link in the left-hand navigation, and click the “Widgets” link under it (you may have to click the dropdown arrow beside the “Appearance” link to bring up the sub-menu).

Now, the page you see gives you a selection of widgets you can use in the center, and on the right is the space where you control what shows up on your site. There’s a section for each widget-ready space your theme supports (i.e. sidebar, footer, etc.), and you control what widgets show up by placing different ones in those spaces.

Your Amazon widget is actually HTML code, pasted into a simple text widget. Find the widget entitled “text” and click the drop-down arrow beside it to open the widget (see above). Make sure this is the Amazon code by making sure the word “Amazon” appears in it somewhere (see below).

Next, select all that code and delete it. Paste the new code you copied at the beginning of this step into the widget, then click “Save”. Go to your homepage and refresh, and verify that the widget is still alive and well, and proudly displays your added resource. If it doesn’t, call us.

If you want to add multiple resources:

1. Go to your “Widgets” page in your Associates dashboard.

You can get to your Associates dashboard from Amazon.com by clicking the Amazon Associates logo in the far right of the site stripe. Click the “Widgets” tab (see above), then click “My Widgets” in the left-hand navigation (see below).

2. Select the correct widget.

Click the “Edit” button beside the correct widget.

3. Add your resources.

Search for the product you want to add, and click “Add Product” (see above). This will add the resource to the bottom of the list on the right, so scroll down and find it, add the comments you want to include with the resource (see below), and click “Save comments”. Repeat this process with each resource you want to add.

When you are finished adding resources, click the “Next step” button.

4. Copy the HTML code.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click the “Save” button. This saves the changes you just made to your widget. Next, click the “Add to my Web Page” button (see above). Click “Copy” in the small window that comes up (see below), then follow instructions outlined in the first section for embedding the code into your WordPress widget.

Step 1: Go to Amazon.com.

Make sure you’re logged in as a customer, and that you see the gray site stripe at the top from Amazon Associates. If you don’t see that, here are instructions for linking your personal account to your Affiliates account.

Now, click on the resource you’d like to recommend. Make sure that you’re actually on that resource’s page, and not the search listing for it. See the example above.

Step 2: Click “Link to this page”.

This will bring up a pop-up box where you can grab the link. First, under “Select link type”, select “Text only”. Then, in the preview box, right-click on the preview link and click “copy shortcut” (depending on your browser, it may say “copy link location” or “copy link address”). See the example below.

Step 3: Go to your WordPress dashboard.

Enter the anchor text into your post or page that you want to hyperlink, and then select it. Next, click the “insert/edit link” button and paste the link you just copied from Amazon Affiliates. Make sure you clear the “http://” out of the “Link URL” field before you paste, since the link you copied already has that code. Click “Insert”.

Step 4: Test your link.

Click “preview” and click the hyperlink you just created. If it takes you to the product page in Amazon and you see your affiliate link in the address bar (see the example above), go back to your dashboard, click “publish” and grab a piece of chocolate to celebrate.

1. Sign up with Amazon Affiliates.

Go to www.affiliate-program.amazon.com and create your account. Use your customer email and password when it asks you to sign in (see the screenshot below).

2. Enable the Site Stripe.

Once you’ve finished creating your account, you should be in the Affiliates dashboard. Click the “Links and Banners” tab (see above), then scroll down and click “Learn more” under the “Site Stripe” section (see below).

Now you should be on the “Site Stripe Help” page. Click the “Sign in to get personalized recommendations” link (see below) to link your customer account with your affiliate account.

This should take you to your customer account, where you should see the gray site stripe at the top (see below). If you do not see it, click “back” and click the “Account Settings – Associates Site Stripe Options” link (see above). That will take you to a page where you can turn on the site stripe.

If you see the site stripe, you have successfully completed your setup and are ready to start having fun. Congratulations!

There are two ways to insert a hyperlink into a WordPress site.

Way #1 Blogroll

One way is by adding a link to the blogroll. This puts a link on the sidebar on every page on your site. You will need to have a blogroll widget somewhere in your site for this to work.

Way #2 Inline Hyperlink

The better way is to insert the link into a post. Typing out a domain like www.ThomasUmstattd.com without making it a link is unprofessional.

The better way is to make the text link directly. So instead of putting www.ThomasUmstattd.com you would put Thomas Umstattd.

How to insert a link in WordPress:

1. Go to the web page you want to link to.
2. Copy the URL. It should start with “http://”
3. Write the text you want to be a hyperlink. It is good to be descriptive and avoid the phrase “click here”
4. Select the text.
5. Click the make link button in WordPress. It looks like this
6. Paste the URL from step one into the link field.
   It looks like this:
   
7. Then click insert.

Your link should turn blue like other links around the web.
